Hello and Welcome! For those of you joining me for the first time my name is Tessie. I am a watercolor artist and pattern designer with a passion for creating beautiful interior spaces. I am thrilled to be participating in Jeweled Interior’s Primp and Pamper Bathroom Refresh where a dozen bloggers are all tackling a bathroom makeover and documenting the process during the month of March. If you missed last week you can catch up here.
The Wallpaper
This week is all about the Wallpaper. I am absolutely thrilled because I decided to design the wallpaper myself! I have been teaching myself surface pattern design for the last couple of years and this will be my first project using my own pattern as wallpaper. Eeeeek!
Are you curious how to design wallpaper? Well, I thought it would be fun to walk you through the process.
It all started out with this water color painting that I did a few months ago.
After the painting was finished it was time to bring it into the computer. I took a photo and brought it into Adobe Illustrator where I used the live trace tool to get the elements digitized. I did a lot of “cleaning up” in illustrator to simplify the sketches and cut down on the number of colors.
After the clean up was complete these are the motifs that I was left with.
Now comes the fun part- creating the repeat!!! With all my flowers and leaves digitized I arranged each of them to create a seamless pattern that would repeat endlessly.
After the repeat was complete I spent many more hours adjusting elements and recoloring the pattern in different ways. Here are the top three color ways that I landed on.
Blue
Mint
Pink
After choosing my three favorite color ways it was time to order samples from Spoonflower. As soon as they arrived, I taped them up to the bathroom wall.
As you can see from the photo below I had four different samples. Three in the three different color ways and one extra pink sample with a larger scale. After staring at the bathroom walls for a few days I decided that I loved the larger scale on the top paper. I also decided to go with the pale pink background since it coordinated best with the light grey walls throughout my home.
I ordered the wallpaper a few weeks ago but I am getting super nervous because it still hasn’t arrived! It should be coming in the next few days so keep an eye out on my Instagram stories.
Once the wallpaper arrives, I will have some serious work to get done. Here’s the plan:
- New light fixture from CB2
- Repainting a Vintage Mirror (More about that next week!)
- Wallpaper the bathroom using my own design printed from Spoonflower.com.
- DIY Board and Batten
Phew! I feel a little exhausted looking at this list but it will be so worth it once it is all done.
Thank you so much for stopping by! I can’t wait to show you more progress next week. Remember to follow me on Instagram to see more behind the scenes.
Now head on over to Southern State of Mind to see what she has cooked up for this week! Also don’t forget to check out the progress of all the other fabulous ladies participating below.
