I had a request from a friend to make some superhero masks for her little boys.

It can be hard to find good dress ups for boys and I thought this idea was genius! What little boy doesn’t love a good mask?

Toothless Batman
I guess little girls like super heroes too….

And bigger girls….

I think the original idea for these masks came from this post over at Cutesy Crafts.
I redesigned a couple of the masks and made my own patterns. Here is what I came up with….

Here is what you will need to make your own:
-
Good quality felt (skip the felt squares and use the felt off of the bolts at the fabric store.)
-
1/4 inch elastic (You will need 14 inches of elastic for each mask)
-
Patterns. If you would like to use my patterns you can find them here, here, and here.
Here are the steps:
First, cut out the pattern pieces and felt pieces. The easiest way to cut the felt is to cut out your pattern first then pin it to your felt and cut around it.

Here are some pieces already cut out (sorry, we are switching over to Hulk).

Next, pin and sew the details onto your top piece.

Then place your top piece onto another piece of felt and sandwich the elastic in between the two (I used 14 inches of elastic for each mask.) Sew around entire mask and around eye openings using a 1/8 inch seem allowance. I always like to sew back and forth over the elastic a few times for added strength.

Trim the back felt and you’re done!

Each mask comes together a little differently. Just remember that each mask should have at least two layers of felt. For Spider man I sewed on the web with black thread. I just kind of free handed this without a pattern, but I am sure you could also use that squeezy fabric paint to squeeze on the web.

And for some of the masks, you have to cut the back out too… like Captain America, Iron Man and Wolverine, but they come together pretty quickly.
Now let the battles begin…

Very cute!! I am pretty sure they'd be a welcome addition to any dress-up box!!
Those are adorable!
Love the masks and the models!
Thanks everyone! Sorry there was a little trouble with the patterns. I think I got it all worked out 🙂
CUTE!!! i may have you make some for christian (or his friends!). i will talk to cubby and let you know :-).
Just printed out your patterns! Can't wait to make them. I know the kids will love them. You are so talented, Tessie! Thanks for sharing with all of us.
How much felt per mask? I need to make several. Please and thank you
It doesn't take too much felt. I would just lay the patterns out and measure how much you will need. It really depends on how many you are making. I like to buy the felt off the bolt (much better quality than the felt squares) and I usually just buy 1/4 yard of each color. Felt on the bolt is very wide so you should have enough to do lots of masks with some left over. Good luck!
I'm interested in ordering masks…how best do i contact you?! 🙂
Amanda
Hi,
I would love to buy the masks from you — but I have a party this weekend! I would be willing to pay fast shipping and a bit more to get them here on time. Let me know how to contact you.
Thanks,
Stevi
Hi! Can you make me some of these masks for my sons party? It's July 14. I need like 34 masks! Thanks!
Did you ever hear how to contact her? I want these masks too! Thx!

Does the Iron Man mask have two layers of red? It doesn't look like it in the photo but I cannot figure out how to attach the elastic. These are awesome by the way.
Great question. You can do it a few different ways, but the easiest is just to sandwich the elastic between the red and yellow. It still looks nice even though the elastic is not quite on the edge. Another option is to sew little red squares onto the back of your mask to cover up the elastic ends. I think that is what I did in the picture above. Just make sure you sew on the squares before sewing on the top yellow piece. Good luck!
Is there any way I can pay you to make these for me? I need 17 if them by Sept 16th. One needs to fit a teenage boy. Can you please contact me at rqueen27@yahoo.com? Thanks!
Hello,
You are so talented and thank you for sharing this. I was trying to print out the patterns, but the links are not working. Are you able to repost or do you have a different link? Please let me know.
Thanks!
Monica
Hi Monica, I am so sorry you could not get the links to work. I just tested them and they seemed to work fine. I also double checked the settings and you should be able to access them. I wonder if other people are having this problem or if it is on your end? Unfortunately I am not very tech savvy 🙁 If you would like to send me your email address I would be happy to send them to you via email. Have a great day! -Tessie
Thanks! I just got them to work. Apparently my computer was having technical difficulties 🙂
I can't view the patterns from my computer. I'm not sure if it's because I have a MAC.
