Well, hello again!!! I’ve got a sweet and simple space for you today, the dining room. I know some people don’t like having a formal dining room, but it’s always been important to me since we love to entertain. Besides, I need a place for all those fancy dishes 🙂
The Dining Room Before
Here’s what the space looked like when we first moved in. Not too bad, but the lighting was frumpy, we were in desperate need of a rug, and the dark wood of our dining room table felt swallowed up with all the built ins.
The Dining Room After
And here’s the after! We got a new table and chairs, replaced the lighting, added a rug, and found a beautiful mirror for the mantle. I absolutely LOVE it!
It’s hard to tell from the photos, but the previous light fixture was off center in the room. It drove me CRAZY and I was happy to finally get an electrician to fix it.
I bought the chandelier from Amazon and it was quite affordable. It fits the age and feel of the house while also feeling fresh and current.
If anyone’s ever gone dining room table shopping you know how incredibly difficult it can be! Finding a table and chairs that are beautiful, sturdy, durable and functional can be super tricky, but I couldn’t be happier with this set from West Elm.
We love eating Sunday dinners here and gathering around the table for board games and after dinner chatting.
Someday, I’m going to wallpaper the whole space (with wallpaper I’ve designed) but until then, I’m enjoying it just how it is.
Changes Made
- Purchased a new chandelier for over the table.
- Had an electrician center the light fixture – crazy that it was off-center before!
- Added new furniture to brighten up the space and balance all the dark wood.
Lessons Learned
- Opposites attract! Since there is so much dark wood in this room it was important to add lighter furniture and upholstered pieces to balance it out.
- Totally worth paying an electrician to rewire an off center light.
- Comfortable dining chairs are a must! The best conversation always happens around the table.

RECAP AND WHAT’S NEXT?
If you’re just catching up, here are the previous posts in the “before and after parade!”
- Friday, Day 1: The Family Room
- Saturday, Day 2: My Miniature Collection
- Sunday, Day 3: Stair Makeover and Piano Room
- Monday, Day 4: Nail Painting Station
- Tuesday, Day 5: Teacup Shelves
Tomorrow we’ll visit the smallest room in our house. There’s just enough room for a twin bed and a small chair… no closets or extras, but it’s become a great little overflow guest room 🙂
See you tomorrow!
