Let’s decorate your home and turn it into a space you love! I recently published a Skillshare class where I teach all about interior design in its simplest form. We’re shrinking it down, simplifying the process, and focusing on creating one small “pocket of joy”.
Do you want a sneak peek into the class? Here is a preview of my favorite decorating shortcut, The Shining Star! This is lesson #4, but you can take the entire class HERE.
What is a Shining Star?
What is a Shining Star?
When redoing a space, I like to choose a “shining star”. A shining star is an item that you’ll use as inspiration for decorating your room. It gives you a jumping off point for choosing colors and creating a feeling for the room.
The shining star, or inspiration piece, can be anything! I often use artwork, rugs, wallpaper, fabric or a piece of furniture as my shining star.
*Tip – If your item has multiple colors you can use this as the color palette for your space!
Shining Star Examples
Below are a few examples of “shining stars” I’ve used in my own home. Don’t overthink this too much. Just choose something that can be a jumping off point for your room design.
I used this ottoman/stool from Anthropologie as the shining star for my bedroom! The minute I saw it, my heart did a little dance and I knew it would be the perfect compliment to my mom’s antique vanity that was passed onto me. This velvet-patterned stool gave me a great jumping-off point for the rest of the room. It tied together the hot pink chair that I already had and inspired me to add navy curtains and green accents throughout the space.
This abstract art print, Bloom from Parima Studio, was perfect for my office space. It created a sense of energy and movement. After choosing this print I decided to paint the wet bar cabinets pink and splurge on a dark green velvet sofa. This piece of artwork not only helped me to narrow down a color palette, but it also provided the feeling I wanted of creative freedom and exploration.
This rug from Rugs USA is the shining star I used for my daughter’s bedroom. It had the boho feel that she loves and helped us to narrow down the colors and style of the room. Rugs make such a big statement in a room that they often make a great choice for a shining star.
I love choosing a special item each time I decorate a room, because it narrows down the choices and makes the whole design process easier.
