MORE ABOUT ME

I'm Tessie -Welcome home!

I had a request from a friend to make some superhero masks for her little boys.

It can be hard to find good dress ups for boys and I thought this idea was genius!  What little boy doesn’t love a good mask?

Toothless Batman

I guess little girls like super heroes too….

And bigger girls….

I think the original idea for these masks came from this post over at Cutesy Crafts.

I redesigned a couple of the masks and made my own patterns.  Here is what I came up with….

Here is what you will need to make your own:

  • Good quality felt (skip the felt squares and use the felt off of the bolts at the fabric store.)

  • 1/4 inch elastic (You will need 14 inches of elastic for each mask)

  • Patterns.  If you would like to use my patterns you can find them here, here, and here.

Here are the steps:

First, cut out the pattern pieces and felt pieces.  The easiest way to cut the felt is to cut out your pattern first then pin it to your felt and cut around it.

Here are some pieces already cut out (sorry, we are switching over to Hulk).

Next, pin and sew the details onto your top piece.

Then place your top piece onto another piece of felt and sandwich the elastic in between the two (I used 14 inches of elastic for each mask.)  Sew around entire mask and around eye openings using a 1/8 inch seem allowance.  I always like to sew back and forth over the elastic a few times for added strength.

Trim the back felt and you’re done!

Each mask comes together a little differently.  Just remember that each mask should have at least two layers of felt.  For Spider man I sewed on the web with black thread.  I just kind of free handed this without a pattern, but I am sure you could also use that squeezy fabric paint to squeeze on the web.

And for some of the masks, you have to cut the back out too… like Captain America, Iron Man and Wolverine, but they come together pretty quickly.

Now let the battles begin…
